21/07/09 - Longridge at Westminster

Following the showing on Monday afternoon of the film 'Bulldozing Democracy' on the destruction of Longridge Wood at the Palace of Westminster, local campaigner have pledged to continue their fight to save the popular beauty spot.

In attendance was the Shadow Minister for Teesside, Greg Clark MP, Lord Bates of Langbaurgh and the Conservative candidate for Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland, Paul Bristow.  Moreover, Marton West councillors Chris and John Hobson led a delegation of residents who wanted to show their support.

Unfortunately, the Local Government Minister, John Healey MP and local MP Ashok Kumar were unable to attend the screening.

Commenting on the event, Paul Bristow stated:

"Although it is disappointing our local MP has not joined our campaign to sace Longridge Wood from Middlesbrough council, it is important that we have made our voices heard at Westminster.  We have secured the support of Greg Clark MP, a member of the Shadow Cabinet, and have made it clear we are not giviong up the fight.

"I fear that this has become a battle of wills with the council, who are determined to not be seen backing down.  This should not be about pride.  It is about listening to local people and saving an amenity that is cherished.''
