Reacting to the debate in the House of Commons on the Teesside steel industry, Paul Bristow, the Conservative candidate for Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland stated:
"The Minister's response shows that the Government have given up saving the steel industry. Local people have still not lost all hope of retaining these jobs but it seems we have been abandoned to our fate by the Government.
"The Minister ignored pleas of an emergency meeting with Tata, and did not address why they have failed to explore with Corus the possibility of selling land for other uses, such as carbon capture and storage.
"Crucially the Minister did not explain why the Government would not tap into the 500 million euro fund that could buy more time for Teesside Cast Products and save jobs. We still need answers!"
I want to thank everyone who has worked so hard on my campaign over the past 18 months. I owe you all a huge debt of gratitude.
