29/01/10 - Let's appreciate our Postal Workers

Letter to the press after my visit to the Royal Mail delivery office in Skelton

Dear Sir,

I would like to place on record my thanks and appreciation to our local postmen and women for their hard work and dedication throughout the recent spell of bad weather.  We are used to delivery staff pounding the streets rain or shine and can often be guilty of forgetting how hard they work.

On Friday morning I visited the Royal Mail delivery office in Skelton which covers an enormous chunk of East Cleveland including many isolated farms and houses.  I was informed that the mail went out every day during the snow and ice except for a few days to some low lying farms.  Many were forced to leave vehicles and bicycles and walk for miles at a time to make sure we got our post.  This must be one of the best records in the country especially given the rural nature of their rounds.

We all rely on an efficient and regular postal service.  It was fantastic for me to learn what goes on behind the scenes and understand it depends on dedicated and hard working staff.  We are lucky to have them.

Yours sincerely
