THE Conservative party is launching a concerted campaign to secure a winnable seat on Teesside .

The party has identified Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland as a potential vote winner.

The Conservatives are aiming to retake the seat which was held by Michael Bates, now Lord Bates the party& 39;s deputy chairman, from 1992 until Labour swept to power in 1997.

Paul Bristow, the Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate, said:

"I have always said that this seat is winnable and it is one that has been targeted by the party in the North-East.

"I am confident but not complacent about winning the seat and I have been campaigning in the area for the last 18 months.

"Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland doesn't get its fair share of support and it is about time something was done about that.

"The area has been served by only Labour MPs for 13 years and I think it is time to change that."
